Kodak UltraMax 400 135-36 - Eastman Version refers to the specific branding and distribution of Kodak’s popular 400-speed consumer film by Eastman Kodak (Rochester, NY), as opposed to the version distributed by Kodak Alaris.

The "Eastman Version" is a recent development (launched in late 2024/early 2025) where the manufacturing company, Eastman Kodak, began selling the film directly to retailers.

Key Differences & Details

While the film inside the canister is the exact same emulsion (GC 400), there are a few distinctions in how it is presented:

  • Packaging: The Eastman version features a "retro-inspired" design. It typically uses a brighter yellow box with a classic red Kodak logo and minimalist graphics, matching the new "Kodacolor" 100 and 200 releases.

  • Distribution: Historically, still photography film was sold through Kodak Alaris (a separate UK-based entity). The Eastman version skips this middleman, with Eastman Kodak handling the sales and distribution themselves.

  • Format: The "135-36" indicates it is standard 35mm film with 36 exposures per roll.

  • Availability: You may see both the Alaris-distributed UltraMax and the Eastman-distributed UltraMax on store shelves simultaneously during this transition period.

Technical Characteristics

Since the emulsion is identical to standard UltraMax 400, it retains these qualities:

  • Speed: ISO 400 (versatile for daylight, overcast, and indoor flash).

  • Color Profile: Warm Kodak tones with punchy saturation and slightly "cool" blue/purple undertones in the shadows.

  • Grain: Medium grain—noticeable but pleasing, giving it a classic "analog" look compared to pro-grade films like Portra.

  • Latitude: Very forgiving; it handles overexposure well, making it ideal for point-and-shoot cameras or beginners.
